Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi
Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), known as the Alter Rebbe, founded Chabad, a dynamic and influential branch of Hasidic Judaism. His teachings created a profound synthesis of Jewish mysticism, law, and psychology, offering a practical path for every individual to connect with the Divine.
Born in Liozna, Belarus, he was a descendant of the renowned Maharal of Prague. A prodigy from youth, he mastered Talmudic law and Kabbalah, becoming a disciple of Rabbi Dov Ber of Mezeritch, the successor to the Baal Shem Tov. His mastery of both the inner and outer dimensions of Torah is reflected in his Yiddish name "Shneur"(שניאור), meaning "Two Lights."
The Tanya: A Blueprint for the Soul
The Tanya, first published in 1797, is Rabbi Schneur Zalman's magnum opus and the cornerstone of Chabad philosophy. Its stated aim is to provide a path for every individual to realize their purpose and forge a deeper relationship with G-d.

A central teaching of the Tanya is the model of two souls within every person:
The Animal Soul
(Nefesh Ha-Behamit) - The source of natural, self-interested desires and physical inclinations. Originating from the material world, its drives must be refined and directed toward holy pursuits.
The Divine Soul
(Nefesh Elokit) - Described as "a literal portion of G-d from above," this soul is the source of all transcendent aspirations, yearning for connection to G-d through Torah study, prayer, and mitzvot.
The goal is not to eradicate the Animal Soul but to subordinate its desires to the will of the Divine Soul, achieving the state of the Beinoni (intermediate person) who maintains mastery over their inclinations.
